Method
1. Images in the press
Objective: media literacy, learning to understand how images can reveal power structures
Method: interpretation of images using photojournalism
Materials: pictures of people from different backgrounds
Time: 45–60 minutes
All images in newspapers and magazines are photojournalism. Media houses’ Instagram accounts are also a treasure trove of images!
Display images cut or printed from newspapers and magazines. Let the participants choose three images that they find interesting.
Let everyone explain why they chose the particular images.
Then discuss the images. Questions to help get the discussion going:
- What are the roles of the people in the images? How does the gender, age or status of the people in the image affect our interpretation of it?
- If there are no people in the image, what drew your attention to it?
- On the basis of the image, what is the accompanying article about?
- Are you already familiar with the topic? Did the image make you want to read the story?
